The purpose of the computer is to calculate, store data, retrieve data and process data. A computer has programmed data or a computer language that tells the computer how to accomplish its purpose. The computer will do only what it is designed to do. Thus, the saying: "Computers do not make mistakes; people do."

Performing calculations

Computers are capable of performing logical calculations such as mathematical operations. Most computers, for example, have built-in calculators that can be used to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Spreadsheets are computerized accounting systems that include whole numbers and totals. Microsoft Excel is an example of a popular spreadsheet program.

Storing Data

Computers are used to store user-generated information. This data is stored in computer memory. The computer will store any information in its memory stored by the user. You, as the computer user, indicate where on the computer you want the information stored. Depending on your computer settings, your computer may store data on your computer every 10 or 15 minutes.

Retrieving Data

Any information stored on the computer can be accessed at a later date. To restore data, open the application, go to the File drop-down menu; then, click on the file name to access the details.

Processing data

All work or computer work is done through data processing. It all starts with the keyboard. Each time you press a key on the keyboard, the computer processes the information. In other words, when I type "p" on the keyboard, this indicates to the motherboard (computer brain) that the letter p should be placed on the computer screen. Similarly, when I use an arrow drawing tool, this signs the mother board to draw an arrow on a computer screen.

Computer Use

The computer has many uses. It was one of the most effective tools in making Internet use possible. The computer can be used for word processing, graphic design, gambling, teaching, bookkeeping, editing, and Internet access. Over the years computers have been used to watch DVDs, play CDs, record, compose music, download and edit photos, and fax details.
